The Confidence Shift: What Katie Pulsifer Taught Me About Starting Before You're Ready

The Self Trust Solution Podcast · Episode 141

Confidence isn't something you wait to feel. It's something you build — one wobbly, uncomfortable, self-trusting step at a time.

That's the reframe Katie Pulsifer brought to Episode 141, and it's one worth sitting with. Because most capable people are doing the opposite — waiting to feel ready before they begin, accumulating preparation in service of creating an internal environment safe enough to risk something. And in the meantime, the thing they want to build stays unbuilt.

Confidence Is Built Through Action, Not Felt Before It

There's a certain amount of preparation that stacks the odds in your favor. And yet — if you let the brain take over — you'll stay in preparation mode indefinitely. You'll second-guess the platform, the system, the approach. You'll wonder if the preparation was thorough enough.

Katie names this honestly: the antidote is simpler and harder than we want it to be. We have to start. We have to put our work in the world and get the feedback. We don't get a do-over unless we begin doing. And as business owners, we get an infinite number of do-overs.

That first result — wanted or unwanted — becomes the data that informs the next move. The iterative process is what builds confidence. Not feeling ready first. Doing it, surviving the wobble, and finding out you're still standing.

This is the Momentum Loop in action: Decide → Do → Have Your Own Back. Every closed loop builds the embodied competence confidence that doesn't depend on circumstances to hold.

Boredom and Resistance Are Expected — Not Signs Something Is Wrong

Something Katie says that belongs in every entrepreneur's operating manual: most of what it takes is boring.

Writing the newsletter. Creating the next piece of content. Doing the research. The repetitive, unglamorous tasks that are easy to talk yourself out of.

Self-trust shows up here in one of its quietest and most essential forms — the ability to be with the boredom and do it anyway. To feel uninspired and not make that mean something about your future or your capacity.

Discomfort only speaks for part of you. It speaks for the part that wants relief in the moment. It doesn't speak for the part that wants to reach the people you're here to help.

Learning to hold both at once — honoring the discomfort and continuing to move — is what self-trust is built from. And it's available in the boring moments more than anywhere else.

What to Do With This

Trade yes/no questions for open ones. Questions like am I ready? Can I do this? almost always get answered with no — because the fearful, protective part of you is running the inquiry. Replace them with: What would I do today if I trusted myself completely? What is one small step I could take right now if I knew I'd be okay? These give airtime to the part of you that wants to move.

Use your values as your decision filter. Katie's three core values — integrity, humility, and love — run everything. When clarity is absent and the outcome is uncertain, values become the decision-making framework. They don't guarantee the result you want, but they guarantee you're acting from integrity. That matters more in the long run.

Start from wholeness, not arrival. Katie's closing invitation is one I want to hand directly to you: you are already whole, wise, and worthy. Not someday. Now. That's the place you begin from — and from that place, action becomes simpler, more sustainable, and more honest.
