Getting Giddy over Responsibility. What?!

Nov 24, 2020
What a ridiculous title and idea, right? Well, not so fast. I will share with you how I came to find responsibility empowering and how at first understanding- I actually did feel giddy.
Seriously, I get giddy over responsibility and you can too.
I will tell you all about it.
Let's dive in...
We are taught at an early age that something being "your fault" is a bad thing.
Your sibling is crying and your parent's may ask "What did you do to him?"
Your teacher may ask "What made you miss that assignment?"
Throughout life, we attribute outcomes to particular factors devoid of any personal responsibility.
Even when we know we are "at fault" we lie or defer responsibility so we can avoid feeling bad or guilty.
We believe you "have to be in the right place at the right time" or "be a lucky person" or 'know the right people."
The truth is this approach to life leaves very little to our own control. It feels very random and haphazard. It removes all power to choose how your life will go.
I don't know about for you, but that is no bueno for me.
I am not in the circle of influence of millionaires and the ultra famous but does that mean that I can't reach for either or both?
Absolutely not!
See I understood that I needed to take responsibility for my actions and take responsibility for what I say and do, but I didn't fully understand what owning responsibility was all about.
When I found out that taking responsibility for EVERYTHING meant E V E R Y T H I N G it clicked. I got so excited!
Throughout my training and studies, I found two methodologies that just clicked. One came many years ago and was interesting but not all together believable, another came not long after and piqued my interest. I was moving toward better understanding. But it wasn't until I merged both with what I call the math of my predominant coaching method that I realized the brilliance of responsibility.
Don't get me wrong, at first it was super overwhelming. Being responsible for all the things meant some pretty tough inner work. It meant coming clean about things that I had previously delegated blame to circumstances and other people. Being honest and vulnerable with myself to gain a clearer perspective was not always fun. But it was necessary and powerful work.
And then I got it. I. Got. It. Boom! If I am truly responsible for everything in my life... that doesn't mean just the "bad" things. It doesn't just mean the things I wanted to blame, defer or avoid. It meant, I am responsible for the good things too! Those things didn't just happen. I wasn't just "in the right place at the right time". I am not just a "lucky person". I created it all - which means I can create MORE!
I take responsibility for it all. I create it all. I am a deliberate creator of my reality- the good the bad and, yes, the not always so attractive. It is all mine! There is so much satisfaction in that. So much power. So, yeah, giddy.
